Laptop Identified

Well I have taken my Specs to the apple store and searched through their products over the last couple of years.  I think I have nailed down what I want from looking at the models.

Wanted:  MacBook Pro (15 inch, Mid 2012) NON RETINA

My only concern with nominating this machine is with the Graphics capabilities.  This MacBook Pro has a couple of variants with processors, 2.3GHz, 2.6GHz and 2.7GHz.  Whilst I don’t think there will be much difference between the power of these units there is a difference in the graphics.

  • NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 512MB of GDDR5 memory (15-inch 2.3GHz configuration) or NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory (15-inch 2.6GHz configuration) and automatic graphics switching

I think that I would like the 2.6 GHz model. I also think the 2.3GHz model will probably do what I want.  I also have a feeling that the 2.3GHz model will be easer to find.

I should be able to upgrade the RAM and install an SSD drive (using the existing drive for storage) for significantly less than a new Pro unit.  This is the last of the upgradeable MacBook Pro’s also, perhaps letting me keep it for a bit longer by upgrading drives and batteries myself.

I have chosen the non-retina model as it will spend most of it’s time being used as an tower like unit with external monitors.  Having a retina screen and not using it all the time just seemed like a waste to me.  The old screen is still ok just not great so it will do me for those times I use it as a true laptop.

Now to try and find one.
